LART's position on the ban on the use of TPO in cosmetics from 1 September 2025
In connection with changes to European Union regulations concerning the use of chemical substances in cosmetic products, LART would like to present its position regarding TPO (diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide, INCI: Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide).
In accordance with the amendment to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, resulting from the classification of TPO as a substance toxic to reproduction, category 1B, under CLP Regulation No 1272/2008, the use of this substance in cosmetic products will be completely prohibited from 1 September 2025.
As a result, TPO will be removed from Annex III and transferred to Annex II of the Regulation, which contains the list of substances prohibited in cosmetic products.
We would like to clearly emphasise that LART does not use TPO in the formulations of its coloured gel polishes or dip powder products. This can be verified in the publicly available Safety Data Sheets for our products.
An Alternative to TPO
Instead of TPO, our formulations use BAPO (Bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phenylphosphine oxide, CAS: 162881-26-7).
BAPO is a more modern photoinitiator permitted for use and is not included on the SVHC list (Substances of Very High Concern). It complies with the applicable safety requirements set out in the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
BAPO is used as an alternative to TPO and remains compliant with current regulations.
